Adelita Grijalva Statement on Due Process, the Rule of Law, and Trump’s Illegal Deportations

Tucson, Ariz. – Adelita Grijalva, Democratic candidate in the special primary election for Arizona’s 7th Congressional District, issued the following statement on the right to due process, the rule of law, and the litany of detentions and deportations being carried out by the Trump regime:

“Due process is the backbone of our justice system. But the Trump regime’s outright contempt and disregard for the rule of law is taking our country to a dark place. Constitutional checks and balances are being blatantly ignored, threatening an end to our democracy.

Trump gave the word, and now our immigrant communities are under attack. Green Card holders are being pulled off the street in broad daylight. Other immigrants who displease Trump with their words are being forcibly sent to remote detention camps. He is recklessly deporting people to foreign prisons before they can even state their case.

“Denying people like Kilmar Arbrigo Garcia due process and defying the court’s authority sends a chilling message. Trump wants to see how far he can go. He started with immigrants, and now “homegrowns are next.” Trump wants to send American citizens to that Salvadoran Supermax. That should horrify every person of conscience.

“Due process is the only thing standing between us and a world where innocence is optional and MAGA is the judge. The way forward is clear: we must fight this tyrannical power grab and uphold the rule of law. It is time for Congress to act and reassert its power of the purse. We cannot spend taxpayer funds to lock up people without due process. We cannot allow this President to ignore court orders. The time to stand up for our democracy is now. Strip the funding and strip the power before we all pay the price.”
